Anti-microbial or anti-bacterial properties are now common in many textile products. Over the years these have centred upon silver-based technologies or specific leachable chemicals, which effectively poison and kill the microbes and bacteria. However, the unfortunate side effect of these treatments creates issues of possible irritation to human skin whilst also creating a situation where resistant microbial strains emerge. Dr Leather employs a smarter alternative, based on a physical kill method, permanently disrupting the cell membrane of the microbe through a virtually invisible molecular spike which we attach at the fibril level of the leather fibre structure. This results in leathers that are more resistant to odour by inhibition of microbe lifecycle, and reducing fibre structure degradation. Furthermore, our secret reaction process ensures it is a durable treatment for the life of the leather and resistant to repeated wetting and washing.
